Wiaan
started his professional journey by studying at University of the Free
State. After obtaining his degrees he
started his articles at a well-known law firm in Bloemfontein. During his articles he attend the Free State
School for Legal Practices and was admitted as a practicing attorney early in
2012. During his time in practice he
worked in the property and commercial department. In 2012 he enrolled and completed the Post
Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning at the Centre of Financial Planning at
the University of the Free State.
After
obtaining his Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning he enrolled for and
passed the conveyancing admission examinations and was later admitted as
conveyancer. In 2019 he also enrolled at
the University of Pretoria in their SARIPA Programme in Insolvency Law and
Practice and passed same summa cum laude.
Wiaan
currently functions as a non-practicing attorney under the job description of
in-house counsel.
Furthermore, during
2018 he was approached by the Free State School for Legal Practices to serve as
an evening lecturer for their Commercial Contracts module and have been doing
so since October 2018.
The
qualifications obtained over time, helped him to develop a specialized
knowledge with regards to commercial matters, property transactions, turnaround
management and business rescue and the experience gained in practice helped him
to be able to effectively implement the knowledge obtained.
His
is very passionate about his work and this, in conjunction with his ability to
be very focused, his persevere and high ethical standard, makes him an asset to
any team.
During his time as student Wiaan was appointed as academic assistant and
later also served as academic tutor in the faculty of law. He was also awarded various accolades during
his studies, the most significant of which was being awarded the Dean’s Medal
for the Faculty of Law.
After his studies, Wiaan embarked on his career and started his articles
at Honey Attorneys, Bloemfontein, in 2010.
During this time, he worked in the property and commercial department.
After being admitted as attorney, he was
appointed as associate and practiced in the same department for several years. He later enrolled for and passed the
conveyancing examinations and the Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning at the
University of the Free State.
In
2014 Wiaan joined the Spesfund team as in-house counsel and is currently still
engaged as such. He furthermore
completed the SARIPA Programme in Insolvency Law and Practice at the University
of Pretoria in 2019.
This included drafting and advising with regards to various commercial agreements. He also attended to the setting up of companies and trusts and advising on different aspect in relation thereto. Wiaan also assisted with identifying and structuring of business structures and – transactions and the vetting of agreements.
Wiaan facilitated and monitored various property transactions, advised on the planning of property developments, property purchase and on-sale transactions, transaction structures and attended to due diligence investigations.
Business Rescue & Restructuring: During the last couple of years Wiaan was predominantly involved in the restructuring and rescue of various financially distressed companies. Most of these restructurings were done within the formal confines of business rescue proceedings, and others were done on a more informal basis. During this time, he has dealt with all facets of business rescue, from the commencement and procedural elements thereof to more intricate legal opinions and court proceedings.
Throughout his studies and subsequent thereto, Wiaan realised that practical training of young professionals is very important. In light of this, and when the opportunity presented itself, Wiaan agreed to become an evening lecturer at the Free State School for Legal Practices. He was appointed as such during 2018 and still serves as lecturer for the Commercial Contracts module.
